The different binding methods mean different function. It is hard to tell which one is the best. It depend on your requirement. You may consider the price, the appearance, the requirement from your client, specific type of books, hot sale book in your area, etc.
The common binding methods are as follows:
一、Glue Binding
Easy to understand, the inner papers were piled up together and then stuck into the book spine with glue. Usually, there is a thicker paper to connect the cover with the first inner page to keep the structure firm. And you also can be punch 6 holes to install into your loose-leaf book, if you have the requirement. The advantage is below :
• It can lay flat. The effect is the best among all of binding methods.
• This type of binding method is easy to tear off.
• After that, it can keep the paper intact.
For this feature, you can write down your priorities on a page, then tear off and paste on the place which is easy to see. That way can make you become a perfect planner.Obviously, there are just a few procedures to make a book. Therefore the price is cheaper than others binding method.
二、Case Binding
The most complicated way of binding. Its another name is hardcover.
• Instead of glue, the thread becomes the more suitable and beautiful material to fix the papers together.
• After that, a layer of glue will be brushed on the left side of papers to reinforce.
• There must be a thicker paper to connect inner page with the cover. We name it endpaper.
• And the cover must wrap up a grey board to protect the inside. Normally, there are a rolling groove along the book spine.
There are more details in this binding method. So this way will increase the cost, but the comprehensive effect of the book shown is the best. No one will say “no” to a hardcover book, if there are no difference except the binding methods. This binding method is the most clients’ choice. Its has the elegant appearance and the longest service life
三、Saddle Stitching Binding
A easy way of binding. Just need to fold the papers and then usually staple twice in the trace of folding. The process of attaching the folded papers to the chain of the bookbinder is like saddling a horse. That is why we call it saddle stitching binding. If the thread is substituted for staple, we call it sewn stitching binding.
You must notice that the binding material is staple or thread. So the amount of page is limited. ( the thickness of a book is generally less than 0.5cm) The staple will rust, which mean its service life won’t too long.
The result of this binding method is that the price is low. So it is suitable to decription of product, brochure, resum, normal magazine, etc.
四、Spiral Binding
It is a broad statement. Any appearance of binding materials in a book, that looks like a circle, can call it spiral binding in china. However, the way of how the binding material is threaded through the holes is different. There are two common ways shown below. One is that a wire is thread through holes in the spiral way. The other is that a wire, folded like the double coil, is thread into the holes like combing. If you want to customize a spiral book, it deserve your notice.
▪ Because of the circle, the spiral book is the most flexible when you flip the papers.
• But the coil is usually exposed outside, so it is vulnerable. ( Now there is a way to protect the coil )
There is a special binding material. Its name is loose-leaf binder. The feature is that you can take the inner papers out or add them into. The ring is divided into two types like “D” and “O”.
五、Softcover Binding
It is just a little difference, compared with case binding. There is no grey board in process of soft binding. Therefore, the cover is soft and can be curving. ( so the saddle stitching binding is one type of the softcover binding ) There are 4 different forms of classic softcover book that the inner papers were fixed by thread and glue.
• Outside Spine: a lay of fabric is wrapped around the edge of cover.
• Inside Spine: it is opposite to outside spine. The fabric on cover is hidden.
• Empty Spine: the space between the spine and cover is hollow.
• Pasted Spine: the spine and cover is adhesive.
